Kelaniya Temple believed to had been built in the era prior to the chronologically recorded history of Sri Lanka (since 543 B.C) was renovated by Prince Uttiya, brother of King Devanampiyatissa following the arrival of Arahat Mahinda in 307 BC. According to the Mahawansa, King Devanampiyatissa’s brother Uttiya renovated the vihara for the first time. Prince Uttiya also built the first ever residential quarters of the Buddhist monks (Sanghawasa) there.

The ancient temple was destroyed many times and again by the Dravidian invaders from Southern India. Each time the temple had been reconstructed. The medieval temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1510 yet reconstructed by King Kirthi Sri Rajasingha. New Temple was initiated in 1927 and completed in 1946 under the patronage of philanthropist Mrs. Helena Wijewardene.

Tangalle Fishery Harbour is the first man made fishery harbour in Sri Lanka. Department of fisheries initiated the construction of this first fishery harbour in 1955. Subsequently Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation financed to construct several fishery habrours, until Ceylon Fishery Habrours Corporation was established in 1972.

Harbour is situated facing the bay and is well protected from South-West Monsoon.

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a world-renowned place of worship, where the left  tooth of Gautama Buddha is enshrined. The temple which is venerated by thousands of local & foreign devotees and tourists daily was named as a world heritage by UNESCO in 1988. 

The temple which carries a lot of value to Buddhists all over the world also has immense cultural value. The architecture is of unique Kandyan architectural style with a combination of the unique style used to build “Dalada Mandira” the shrines which housed the Sacred Tooth Relic previously in other kingdoms.

The temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is built in the city of Kandy near the ancient Royal Palace which is situated to the North of the temple and the forest reserve called “Udawaththa Kelaya” to the East. The famous Kandy Lake also known as “Kiri Muhuda” to the South and “Natha & Paththini Devala” on the West. The temple is adorned with intricate carvings using gold, silver, bronze and ivory.

Richmond Castle is an Edwardian mansion in Kalutara district. Built between 1900 and 1910, it was the home of Mudaliar Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena. The building is currently owned by the General Board of Trustees. it open to the public.

The house sits on a hill 2 km (1.2 mi) from the Kalutara, adjoining the Kalu Ganga River at Palatota,on a 42 acres (17 ha) estate beside the Kalutara-Palatota Road.
